The AI weekend app: fast to build, costly to keep

AI now lets a domain expert build a working business application over a weekend. The hard part comes after launch: who changes it, upgrades it and answers for it when the person who built it has moved on.

Split picture: on the left, Riya frowns at a laptop amid tangled amber code; on the right, the same Riya calmly snaps coloured blocks into a glowing teal engine.

Day one is the easy part

Building with AI is a real leap. An operations lead can describe what the team needs and have a working application in days, without waiting in the IT queue. That speed is worth keeping.

But an application is not finished when it goes live. Over the following years it has to change with the business, stay secure, keep talking to outside services and be understood by people who did not build it. That is where most of its cost sits.

When AI writes custom code, every line of it becomes something your team now owns: to read, upgrade, secure and fix, long after the weekend it was written.

Five ways a weekend app becomes a weekday problem

  • The bus factor: the person who built it leaves, and nobody else can safely change what the AI wrote.
  • Technology rot: frameworks and libraries age every year, and upgrades keep getting postponed until a security advisory forces them.
  • Integrations that break: an outside service renames a field, and a script nobody remembers stops the work.
  • Scaling to new teams: every region wants the app slightly differently, and copies of the code multiply every fix.
  • Licences and ownership: AI-written code can bring in packages nobody chose, with licence terms nobody read.

The stories below play each one out side by side, with the voice-over on or off.

Keep the AI speed, change what it produces

DynamicForm keeps the speed and changes the output. You give its AI the same requirement document, and instead of writing code it fills in the platform's configuration: screens, workflows, menus, roles and integrations, stage by stage, for your IT team to review and apply.

The platform's engine runs that configuration on the web and on Android. Complex systems go live in about 30 days and simple ones in hours, and every later change is made in the same configurators, by whoever is on the team at the time.

When custom code is still the right answer

A platform is not the answer to everything. Software that is your product itself, unusual algorithms, or experiences that need a fully custom interface are usually better written as code by a team that will own it for the long term.

For the forms, approvals, workflows and back-office systems that run most businesses, configuration on a maintained platform is usually the cheaper thing to live with.

Five stories, two worlds

Each story starts the same way: someone uses AI to build an app fast. Then watch what happens over the following months when that AI wrote custom code, and when it filled in DynamicForm's configuration instead. Turn the voice-over on to hear each story told; each one runs for well over a minute, with subtitles below.

The stories are illustrations with invented people, not accounts of real companies. The licence story is general information, not legal advice.

Questions

If an expert can build an app with AI in days, why use a platform?

Because building is only the first few days. With custom code, your team takes on reading, upgrading, securing and fixing that code for as long as the app runs. With DynamicForm, the AI produces configuration that runs on a maintained engine, so later changes are made in the configurators rather than in code.

Does DynamicForm's AI write code?

No. It reads your requirement document and proposes configuration: screens, workflows, menus, roles and integrations. Your IT team reviews it and applies it, and the platform's engine runs it.

What is the licence risk with AI-written code?

AI assistants can add open-source packages, and the packages those depend on, without anyone choosing them. Some carry copyleft licences that, for software you distribute or hand over to clients, can require sharing source code on the same terms. This is general information, not legal advice; ask your legal team about your own case.

We already built an app with AI. Can we move it?

Yes. Describe the app or upload its requirement document, and DynamicForm's AI proposes the configuration stage by stage, for your team to review before anything goes live.
